Rappahannock® is the "grower’s favorite" in the Peterson lineup. While other varieties are bread for sheer mass, Rappahannock was selected for its elegance and ease of management. It is perhaps the most uniquely identifiable pawpaw variety in the orchard—its horizontal leaf habit is so distinct that it can be spotted from across a field. It offers a refined, silky eating experience with a seed ratio that rivals the best professional hybrids.
Developed by R. Neal Peterson from a wild-derived population in Northern Virginia, Rappahannock was isolated in 1994 and patented in 2004. It represents the "silky" end of the flavor spectrum, prioritizing a clean finish and buttery mouthfeel over the heavy floral complexity found in varieties like Susquehanna or Sunflower.
Physical Attributes: The fruit is symmetrical and medium-sized. Its greatest technical asset is the seed percentage—averaging as low as 3%, it is one of the most "fleshy" fruits in the genus relative to its size. Palette: The flavor is pure and sweet. It lacks any bitter or resinous aftertaste, making it the perfect "bridge" variety for people who are hesitant about the unconventional flavor of pawpaws. Logistics: The "color break" (skin turning yellow) is a rare and valuable trait in pawpaws, allowing growers to harvest at the exact peak of ripeness without guessing.
Picking Efficiency: In commercial settings, Rappahannock is favored because its fruits tend to hang on the outside of the canopy, made visible by the horizontal leaves. Structure: The tree has a delicate branch structure. Because it is highly productive (KSU trials recorded up to 95 fruits per tree), young trees may require skeletal support or careful pruning to prevent branch breakage under heavy crop loads.
Maturity Timing: Its mid-September harvest window is a major advantage. It allows the fruit to develop full brix (sugar levels) during the warmest parts of late summer, ensuring a high-quality crop even in years where autumn arrives early.
Thrives in the Southeastern and Mid-Atlantic USA. It is less suited to the extreme humidity of the deep South (due to Phyllosticta sensitivity) but performs beautifully in well-ventilated, sunny sites. Its unique habit makes it a stunning specimen tree for edible landscaping.
Rappahannock® is the variety for the gardener who values beauty and ease. It is a productive, silky-smooth fruiter that tells you exactly when it's ready to eat and presents its fruit on a silver platter of horizontal leaves. It is a cornerstone of any diverse pawpaw collection.
